How Do I Know If They're "The One"?
Sorry to disappoint you early: there's no confetti. No audible voice. No verse that lights up on the page with their name in it.
I wish it worked that way too. It would save a lot of anxious nights. But God's guidance for the biggest decisions of your life almost never arrives as a single dramatic confirmation. It arrives as wisdom, character, and peace — three things you can actually examine, unlike a feeling you're hoping to have.
Stop Asking the Wrong Question First
"Is this the one" is actually the second question. The first one is: is this person becoming who they say they are? Character over time tells you more than chemistry in a moment. Someone can feel like destiny and still not be honest, faithful, or growing. Someone can feel ordinary and still be exactly who God built to walk with you toward who you're becoming.
Proverbs doesn't tell you to find someone exciting. It describes someone trustworthy (Proverbs 31:11) — "the heart of her husband doth safely trust in her." Trust, not thrill, is the foundation the rest gets built on.
What Actually to Look For
- Do they run toward God or away from Him under pressure? Watch what they do when life gets hard, not just when it's easy.
- Are they honest even when honesty costs them something? Small dishonesty now is a preview of larger dishonesty later.
- Do people who've known them longest trust them? Your excitement is new information. Their history isn't.
- Is there peace, not just intensity? Paul describes love as patient (1 Corinthians 13:4) — patience and anxious obsession are not the same feeling, even though they can feel similar at first.
God Is Sovereign Over the Choice, Not Silent About It
You are not left to guess alone. "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Proverbs 3:6) is a promise of direction, not a promise of a lightning bolt. Direction usually looks like: wise counsel from people who love you, growing peace instead of growing dread, and a pattern of character that holds up under real pressure, not just good lighting.
You will not get certainty before you commit. Nobody does. What you can get is enough wisdom to commit well — and then the commitment itself, made before God, is what carries you the rest of the way. "The One" is less something you discover and more someone you choose, and then keep choosing, one faithful day at a time.
